Working Abroad
The Belgian audio industry is still young. Although, right now, it doesn’t seem like the grass is that much greener in other countries. But that’s not to say it’s entirely unwise to peek over the border.
For the time being, the Belgian audio industry seems quite sedentary compared to the Belgian film and television industry, which for years has been sending out its sons, daughters, and everyone in between to all corners of the world - from directors to editors to DoPs. There are exceptions, of course, and extenuating circumstances: the Belgian audio industry is still very young, and it doesn’t look like the grass is that much greener in other countries right now. Everyone is looking for sustainable business models.
But that does not mean seeking opportunities abroad would be entirely unwise. As Helena de Groot, Martin de Wind, and Lucas Derycke did. Helena lives in New York, where, among other things, she produces The Paris Review Podcast for the eponymous and quite legendary literary magazine. Martin has just produced a British and German remake of the popular Dutch podcast De Blankenberge Tapes. And Lucas (De kunst van het verdwijnen) has regularly worked in Germany.
Radio reporter Elke Vanhaecke, who herself lives in New York, talks to the three podcastmakers.
This talk is in Dutch.
